Something I learned through coaching that has been much value in communicating with needs to Hospital Administration: ”The way I prepare for things and the way I do things is different. For example, in preparing for a meeting, in the past, it would entail what I wanted to accomplish and it was really one-sided and now I'll look at the other side. I ask myself what is it that the other person can see and help me with for the demands that I would bring to them. Using that frame of reference and instead of being needy or demanding, I recognize that we have mutual needs and that the burden level of my demands at that point become minimized.”
Gerri and I worked on how to manage difficult conversations using open dialogue and providing feedback to peers. We would role-play before the conversations and process the result in our following coaching sessions. I know that I have improved in this area as my anxiety level diminished and the relationships with my peers have become stronger. They tell me that they actually appreciate the feedback.

As a result of coaching with Gerri, I'm more of a believer that the root of all of this is self-awareness. That's where it begins. If you don't have awareness, how can you manage the energies around you and yourself.

Another valuable, timely example is that I was recently appointed the Chairman of Surgery. I had a very important meeting with many people, discussing a sensitive topic with many of our surgeons. I knew that that topic would cause too much unnecessary dissent or arguments. Gerri assisted me in planning for the meeting. My preparation for meetings has become more natural and less about what I want to gain and more about helping the other person see that we have mutual needs; consequently, the burden level of my demands becomes minimized.
A Co-worker sought me out to get my opinion on a situation as she saw that I had become “very observant to the non-verbal”. That was validation for me and I like that people have noticed that change in me.
In the field of medicine, there are a lot of conflicting interests on multiple levels. As a physician, there, is the interpersonal conflict of making sure the patients’ needs are met while maintaining and continuing on with administrative needs within the hospital. By spending time to recognize the internal conflict as well as recognizing external factors, I’ve been able to better prioritize and to juggle many different conflicting tasks with essentially the care as well as with the importance that they deserve. One at a time.
I now understand my weaknesses and situations where I'm out of my comfort zone. In working with Gerri, I know how to work through those situations and get in front of them so they're no longer as uncomfortable, and I can present myself in a more confident way. In the past, I tended to miss out on opportunities because I didn't want to put myself in those situations where I was uncomfortable.
Gerri has a strong sense of self, great humor, strong business and result focus, and excellent listening skills. She can be provocative when it is most needed and balance it with support, which is a tremendous gift.
Using assessments such as the 360 and the DISC, I've been better equipped to understand my personality style and those of my colleagues. I would be able to pre-identify when I would need to be intentional with different responses for the situations that would arise.
